World Habitat Day 2009

Morning prayer will be held at 8:00 AM in the first-floor lobby of the SUB.

We will be selling t-shirts and holding a fundraiser at a table in the 1st floor lobby of the SUB from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Please stop by and help us support Habitat for Humanity!!!

Also, the executive director of Waco Habitat for Humanity will be speaking on the topic, "Habitat for Humanity's Partnership Housing Program." It will be a great speech and an opportunity to learn more about Habitat for Humanity! Refreshments start at 5:00pm and the lecture will start at 5:30pm. We will be in the Baines room in the SUB.

And finally, a few statistics about poverty in general and here in Waco:
  • Homeownership rate in Waco is just 46% compared to about 65% statewide & nationally
  • Poverty rate in waco is 24.5%, which is higher than comparably sized Texas cities (2000 Census):
    Waco=24.5% Beaumont-19.1% Lubbock-17.6% Tyler-16.3% Ft. Worth-15.5% Amarillo-14.0%
  • In the low-income Census tracts that Waco Habitat serves, the poverty rate is higher, 36%, and homeownership rate is lower, 38%
  • Waco Habitat houses (120 to date) annally generate $115,000+ in property taxes for McLennan County
  • Waco Habitat has built 120 houses to date!
  • The average monthly cost of a WHFH house is $380, including taxes and insurance (25-year mortgage)
  • For children, living in a decent, stable home increases odds of HS graduation by 25% and college by 116%, future homeownership by 59%, voting by 15% (Cincinnati Ofc of Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation)
  • Baylor Habitat was the first campus chapter, established in 1987
  • Tonight 3 billion people, about 40% of the world's population will sleep in overcrowded conditions, cramped in a small room with three or more people.
  • Over 70% of the world's inadequately housed are women
  • In December 1985, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first Monday of October to be "World Habitat Day" in recognition of the state of human settlements and the basic need for adequate shelter for all.
  • Secure tenure is the ability to live in a place without fear of eviction
  • Neighborhood revitalization includes the various ways affiliates are rehabilitating, renovating and building sustainable communities.
